GOA CHURCH SUPPORTS ENGLISH AS MOI

PANJIM: The Goa Church, which runs more than 100 educational institutions in the state, has backed English as a medium of instruction while supporters of regional languages plan to stage a mammoth rally against it.  The Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE), in an official statement issued here Wednesday, said English should also be permitted as the medium of instruction besides Konkani, Marathi or a regional language in aided primary schools.

19 MINES FOUND WITHIN HALF A KM OF THE SELAULIM RESERVOIR

There was not untoward incident reported from any quarter and the law and order situation was well under control during the entire polling exercise. PORVORIM: Mapusa Police on Friday arrested Nachinola Sarpanch Martina Fernandes in connection with a forgery case.  According to Mapusa PSI T Dhavasker, contractor Dashrath Shirodkar in a complaint filed with Mapusa Police on February 5 stated that Nachinola Sarpanch Fernandes and the panchayat secretary had forged his signature and withdrew Rs 66,581 from the bank on November 18, 2005 by preparing bogus vouchers in his name in respect of construction work of Balwadi.

PONDA: Ponda might not be one of Goa's biggest towns but it certainly has some alarming suicide figures in recent years. In 2010, Ponda saw a 5% rise in suicide cases as compared to 2009, according to Ponda police records.

PANJIM: Mr Shantaram Naik, MP, has demanded reforms in education and examination system, as a measure to minimise increasing incidents of student suicide in the country.  Raising the issue during zero hour in the Rajya Sabha, on Thursday, Mr Naik demanded that the 1986 Education Policy should be replaced by a new one and it should address issues pertaining to students suicides.

MINING CORRIDOR IN A PHASED MANNER APPROVED

PANJIM: The construction of a 40-km mining corridor in a phased manner, exclusively for transportation of iron ore in Sanguem was approved by the Goa cabinet on Wednesday. Chief minister Digambar Kamat said the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) will undertake the project in three phases and work of the first phase will be awarded soon.
