SAND LADEN TRUCKS FIND NO ENTRY ZONE FROM MOLLAR TO GAUDALIM FERRY POINT

OLD GOA: Bowing to pressure from citizens and activists of the area, the North Goa collector has initiated the process to declare a busy road from Mollar, Corlim to Gaundalim ferry point as a 'no entry zone' for sand-laden trucks.  Police and other authorities inspected the area and found that the trucks are moving through the thickly populated residential areas and part of an industrial hub in the village.
"Police had requested the deputy collector to issue the notification for vehicles carrying sand because of the danger to pedestrians," a source said. In a letter to Corlim panchayat, deputy collector, Francisco Ferrao has requested it to furnish detailed comments within 15 days about the proposal to ban movement of sand laden trucks under the motor vehicles act 1988.
The members of Corlim citizens and civic forum had complained to the panchayat and various departments regarding the illegal extraction and stocking of sand on the banks of Cumbarjua canal at Gandaulim and also the movement of sand-laden trucks through the densely populated area. "The trucks pass along a busy road full of students, factory workers and villagers residing in the area," Baptista Pereira, secretary of the Corlim forum said. The requisite signage indicating the barring of trucks from entering the area will be up soon, sources said. - TNN
