PANJIM: The crime branch arrested two activists of the United Tribal Association Alliance (UTTA) on Saturday in connection with the violence at Balli, Quepem that occurred on May 25. Another case after Nadia Torrado’s flopped case that is investigated by an incompetent officer Sunita Sawant.
The activists, Govind Shepu Gawade, 39, and Malu Velip, 41, were summoned by the Crime branch at Dona Paula for questioning after which they were placed under arrest for alleged offences registered against them at the Cuncolim police station.
Both activists were arrested under Section 143 (unlawful assembly), Section 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servants), Section 307 (attempt to murder), Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from doing his duty), Section 341 (wrongful restraint of people affected by the agitation), Section 431 (mischief by damage to national highway- 17) read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly with common objective) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act.
Investigating Officer Sunita Sawant said that the two activists will be produced before the magistrate for police remand.
On May 25, thousands of tribals blocked NH-17 at Balli junction and also squatted on the tracks obstructing rail traffic for hours. Later, after intervention of minister for tribal welfare Felipe Neri Rodrigues, UTTA members dispersed from the KRC tracks but intensified their stir at the Balli junction. Protesting against non-fulfillment of their demands, the activists allegedly damaged public property and set police jeeps and motorcycles on fire.
A lathi-charge resorted to by the police resulted in retaliation from the tribals who pelted stones on the law-enforcement personnel.
Policemen retreated from the scene, with a few sustaining injuries. Later that evening, an altercation arose between the activists and some local residents after which the office of a cooperative society was set on fire. The fire spread to a factory nearby. Charred bodies of two tribal youth were found in the factory later that night. One person was arrested in this connection by police on Friday.

Yes this lady is totally incompetent to investigate the cases. These people have paid bribes and become policewoman. The intelligence was never checked and I am sure the mark sheet was never seen during the interview. She already bungled the Nadia Torrado case and now she is out to destroy this case too. Birds of same feathers flock together. Above her is Chandrakant Salgaoncar who will guide her in destroying the evidence linking to the politicians. Crime branch has played a game here by giving the investigation to Sunita instead of Chandrakant Salgaoncar who is an expert in sabotaging evidence just to cast away the doubts.
This is the most disgusting event in Goa. However we have already seen the expetise of the Crime branch during the investigations of police-politician-drugs nexus case and Nadia Torrado case. The useless only fit to take matka bets a primary education failed home minister Ravi Naik call this professionalism. Does this uneducated home minister know what is the meaning of the word "Professional"? I doubt he ever came across such words in his marathi medium fith class (which is his SSC)
Law an order is Goa IS A JOKE. Our dandia police are a joke in Goan society and our politicians are CHORS.
Has any previous cases taken up by Crime Branch ever come to conclusion so far?. When Incompetent and corrupt officer sitting at the helm of Investigation agency what people will expect, people have lost faith and trust of law, this is mockery of law and its people. Puppet and useless CM has got only one thing to say "Law will take its own cause",. But where is the law? This is a joke of filthy and corrupt Indian rule.
Yes, our Chief Minister has become famous for the "Law will take its own course" and his Home Minister is famous for "Our Goa Police are very competent to handle such cases". But sad to say that "Lawlessness" and "Incompetence" does exist in Goa and go hand in hand where our politicians and police are concerned.
I agree: I think Tribal Chiefs /Chieftains/Headman etc in African Vilages are better Administrators than those in Goa.
Sunita is acting like prostitute of Congress Government.His women does not know how to conduct a panchanama is now heading crime branch of Goa Police.This shameless lady must be sleeping with Ravi Naik and probably she will get Police Medal for arresting two UTAA members as well for eyewash arrest of state sponsor goons from Desai community.
This particular girl was also investigating officer for the infamous Domnick Coutinho murder mystery of Cancon ( visit www.goamurdermystery.com) with political pressure from local politicians she destroyed all the evidence.
