MARGAO: Relatives of Agnelo Fernandes, from Cuncolim, whose body was recovered from a pond by the Cuncolim police and registered the case as accidental drowning, have raised suspicions that the deceased could have been murdered and have accused the police of hushing up the matter.
Addressing reporters at Margao, the kin of the deceased said the needle of suspicion pointed to a person along with whom the deceased had left his house on the day he went missing.
"Agnelo was taking a nap at his house in the afternoon when this person came and took Agnelo along with him on his (other person's) bike. As he didn't return that night, we searched for him at several places. His body was found floating in a pond at Dandora, Cuncolim, the next day," said Body Rodrigues, the brother-in-law of the deceased, in the presence of Agnelo's brother Jerson and his two sisters Effie and Maria.
While pointing out that the part of the left hand, from below the elbow, of the deceased's body was missing and that the face was found to be disfigured, Rodrigues said that those were enough reasons to probe whether Agnelo was done to death.
The deceased's relatives have already made a representation in this regard to the superintendent of police (South) Allen De Sa demanding justice.
However, Cuncolim police inspector Nelson Albuquerque has maintained that no case of suspected murder can be made out. Pointing out to the autopsy report, Albuquerque told reporters that no fresh ante-mortem injuries were found on the body and that all visible injuries were postmortem.
