KAMAT GOVT TO ACQUIRE LAND TO RELOCATE MIGRANT RUN SCRAPYARDS IN GOA

PANJIM: Goa government led by Digambar Kamat has proposed to acquire around 1,38,000 sq m of land for 'Trade Zones' to relocate around 381 existing scrapyards in the state. Directorate of industries, trade and commerce have estimated that around 72,000 sq m of land is required in North Goa, while 66,000 sq m is needed to be acquired in South Goa.
Directorate of industries, trade and commerce has directed both district collectors to identify the land in their jurisdictions and submit the report by May 20. "We have directed all mamlatdars to scout for land in and around the industrial estates," said North Goa collector Mihir Vardhan.
Out of 191 scrap units in North Goa, 83 are in Bardez and will require 36,000 sq m; the 56 in Ponda taluka will take up around 21,000 sq m; the 33 units in Tiswadi units will take up 10,000 sq m and 15 in Bicholim require 3,000 sq m. The three units in Sattari will need 1,100 sq m, while 150 sq m has been earmarked for the single unit in Pernem.
Similarly, out of 190 units South Goa, 148 are in Salcete and will require 51,000 sq m, while Mormugao has 32 (13,000 sq m), Sanguem has 4 (500 sq m), Quepem has 5 (850 sq m) and Canacona has one unit (200 sq m).
The directorate of industries, trade and commerce has received 381 applications from scrapyard owners seeking regularization of their activities under Goa Waste (scrap) Recycling Units Scheme 2010, out of which 191 are from North Goa and 190 from South Goa. "A joint committee under the chairmanship of deputy collectors has started case-by-case scrutiny of applications," informed Vardhan.
This committee consists of departments of police, fire force, health department, TCP, muncipality and panchayat representatives.  It may be recalled that chief minister Digambar Kamat had assured legislative assembly in February that the government would regularize all existing scrapyards and shift them outside the towns and public places.
