DELEGATION OF KBM MEETS CONGRESS GS JAGMIT SINGH BRAR

MARGAO: A delegation of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal (KBM) met Congress general secretary and Goa desk in-charge Jagmit Singh Brar at Panjim on Wednesday and persuaded him to prevail upon the state government not to effect any change in the state's education policy over the medium of instruction.
The delegation comprised KBM president Prashant Naik, former KBM president Uday Bhembre, Fr Jaima Couto, Fr Mousinho Ataide, Nagesh Karmali, N Shivdas and Arvind Bhatikar.
"The Right to Education (RTE) Act states that the medium of instruction in primary schools should be in one's mother tongue or in the regional language. The Goa government has adopted this policy and we demanded that no change be made to this at the moment," Naik told reporters, while addressing a press conference at Margao.
Naik said that they also met education minister Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate, who said he "regretted having remained present at the public meeting at Azad Moidan, Panjim, (to demand the inclusion of English as the medium of instruction in government primary schools)". Naik said, "Monserrate also clarified that he has not signed any memorandum presented to anybody in that regard."
Addressing reporters advocate Uday Bhembre said that they explained to Brar and his secretary Sudhakar Reddy that any change in the state's policy to include English as the medium of instruction in government-aided schools would have nationwide ramifications. Naik said that the delegation was assured that the government would not take any decision "until the views of all sections are duly considered".
