WASTE TREATMENT PLANTS FOR 12 MUNICIPALITIES BY 2011 END

MARGAO: 12 out of 14 municipalities in the state will have their own waste treatment plants by the end of the year 2011, said the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat adding the municipalities have to play a major role in disposal of garbage.
Mr Kamat further assured the municipalities to provide a full support to solve the garbage problem. The government is committed to the welfare of the common people, he said and appealed to the people of the state to co-operate with the government to make Goa a model welfare state.
Mr Kamat was speaking after commissioning the garbage treatment plant constructed at the cost of ` 1.60 crore at Cuncolim in the distinguished presence of the Minister for PWD, Mr Churchill Alemao and the Minister for Urban Development, Mr Joaquim Alemao, on the occasion, of Gandhi Jayanti, on Saturday.
The 10-tonne garbage treatment plant has been constructed by the Cuncolim Municipality on a land admeasuring about 28,000 square metres behind the Cuncolim IDC area. The plant is fitted with latest equipment.
Speaking further, Mr Kamat said that the government has been successful in achieving notable progress and meeting the aspirations of the people
The Minister for PWD, Mr Churchill Alemao said the people of Goa should co-operate with the government for taking up the community oriented projects in accelerating socio-economic progress in every nook and corner of the state.
Mr Alemao complimented the Urban Development Minister for setting up the garbage treatment plant in Cuncolim, which would help to dispose of garbage in a proper manner and maintain cleanliness.
Minister for Urban Development, Mr Joaquim Alemao stated that garbage treatment plants would be set up to take care of garbage in 12 municipalities out of the 14 municipalities; this would help to solve the problem of solid waste management in urban areas in the state.
He expressed happiness over the setting up of the garbage treatment plant in Cuncolim and added that the long pending demand of the people in Cuncolim has now been fulfilled. He also said that people in Cuncolim should cooperate with the concerned authorities in door-to-door garbage collection.
Former minister, Mr Arecio D’ Souza, former chairperson of CMC, Mr Filonio Vaz and Mr Oscar Martins spoke on the occasion Chairperson of Cuncolim Municipal Council, Mr Devendra Dessai, welcomed the guests and reviewed the development activities in Cuncolim area on the occasion.
