HI-TECH BY POLLS IN VALPOI

VALPOI: Fingerprinting and photography of all the voters will make the by-elections due in Goa on October 16 different and special.  All the voters will be photographed and their finger prints will also be taken at the polling booth itself during the election according to North Goa District Collector Mihir Vardhan. The methods have been adopted to facilitate the election process and make it transparent, he added.
The software has been developed by Goa Electronics Ltd (GEL). Each booth will have a computerised voters facilitation centre .  “ Voter will be able to search their name, serial number or part number immediately at the click of a button,” the District Collector said.
“We had purchased netbooks for all our talathis (ground level revenue officials) for carrying out crop surveys. The same netbooks will be used to carry out both exercises at the Valpoi by-poll,” Vardhan said.  There are 17,912 voters in the Valpoi legislative assembly constitution.

Fingerprinting and photography may be the hi-tech way forward. “BUT and a BIG BUT” where will all the information be stored? Who will have access to it? Will the information be abused to frame the innocent of crimes they never commit? Having the most “advanced corrupt system” in Goa anything is possible. Moreover it is a breach of human rights.
