FAMILY OF MAHANAND PAYS FOR HIS CRIMES

PANJIM:  The ordeal of alleged serial killer Mahanand Naik’s family, his wife Pooja had to take transfer out of Goa and his daughter was refused admission in schools, his lawyer said today.
“Pooja, Mahanand’s wife faced harassment and humiliation after the serial killings came to light,” Adv Mauro Menezes, lawyer representing him said outside the Sessions Court hall today. The lawyer said that Pooja was in constant touch with him till recently inquiring about the case but now she has stopped contacting him.
Pooja was working in ICAR at Old Goa and now she has apparently taken transfer somewhere else, he said. The lawyer earlier told the Court that no nurseries in Goa were admitting the couple’s two-year-old daughter.
The mother-daughter earlier in 2009 was shifted to a safe location by a women’s organization after they were shunned by villagers who also torched the former’s house at Shiroda. It so happened that once Pooja left her daughter at her parents place and took shelter at Panjim town police station for a night.
Seeing adverse situation that Pooja was facing, Panjim sub-judicial magistrate had written to the Directorate of Women and Child requesting to take action so as to provide shelter to the duo at Apna Ghar. Pooja had written to the Government that she was socially ostracized for shelter in the state and threatened with harsh brutalities. (HD)
