PANJIM: A couple from Calangute has written to the high court of Bombay at Goa alleging that their minor relative was taken away from them and given to an "unauthorized person" without a proper inquiry being conducted by child welfare committee (CWC) members. They have sought action against CWC members responsible for the act.
On September 7, 2010 a division bench comprising justices D G Karnik and F M Reis directed that the matter be heard along with a PIL dealing with other issues pertaining to the CWC, besides that of children being given into foster care without compliance with provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
The court also directed the CWC and the government to file their response to the said letter.
Alleging that they are victims of acts committed by present CWC members, under whom children in need of care and shelter are placed at the state run home Apna Ghar, the couple in their letter dated July 21, 2010 to the high court registrar wrote, "...a child who was from our relation (sic) and whose parents had expired about 11 years back is illegally given to unauthorized person without conducting proper inquiry. Further we were not given any opportunity to meet the child and put forth correct facts. Therefore we are forced to approach you."
The couple further stated that they decided to bring the 6-year-old girl (now 16) to their home after her parents had expired. (TNN)
