MARGAO MUNICIPALITY LAUNCHES DRIVE TO RECOVER HOUSE TAXES

MARGAO: The Margao municipality has launched a drive to recover house-tax arrears. Municipality sources informed that recovery of house-tax arrears to the tune of 5 crore was to be carried out adding that the drive has evoked a good response.
Accounts-cum-taxation officer of the municipality, Mr Damodar Yeleker said that since 2009 the municipality has recovered ` 2.65 crore from the defaulters, pending for a long time.
He said that recovery officer, Mr Anil Bandodker with the assistance of Mr Dilip Khanapurker and Mr Ashok Prabhu of tax recovery section zeroed in on households that had not paid house taxes in the initial phase.
The taxation section has prepared a list of defaulters and served notices on them to pay house tax within a fortnight, and some have paid. If the defaulters failed to pay house-tax arrears within 15 days of the notice, then legal procedure as laid down under the Municipal Act would be followed, he said, adding there are over 45,000 tenements in the Margao municipal jurisdiction.
To facilitate the payment of the taxes by senior citizens and disabled people, the MMC officials depute its field staff to collect cheques and also deliver receipts. In some cases, house-tax arrears are also accepted in phases and receipts are given.  It is understood that the municipality has also prepared a list of shopkeepers who have not paid the rent and recovery is being done.
