It is very disconcerting to know that the Bollywood film, Dum Maro Dum, has featured Goan women in an adverse manner. That Bipasha Basu is reported to have called Goan women cheaper than liquor, is very revolting. In a way, this is nothing new. Bollywood films more often than not, portray Goans as drunkards and loose characters.
And now this derogatory statement concerning Goan women! All this is far from the truth. Goan women, known for their dusky beauty, have a high moral character and are very loving, gentle and caring. They have a high ethical sense and are dedicated to their families. Simplicity has always been their hallmark.
The drawbacks of the film must be viewed seriously by the government and the film must be banned. Imagine the adverse impact it can create among millions of viewers of the film across the country on the status of Goan women! In fact, earlier Rohan Sippy had said that the film would not feature anything fishy about Goa. He has gone back on his words.
It is heartening to know that Bailancho Saad and other organisations, and also the Shiv Sena, have come forward in protest. The government must not take it lying down, as in other cases, but take up the matter seriously and get the scene/s rectified before it is too late.
