CALL FOR AN EFFECTIVE FOLLOW-UP ACTGION TO JUSTICE MICHAEL SALDANHA’S INDEPENDENT PROBE

PANJIM: Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao has said that a repetition of the communal violence in Karnataka will destroy the very fabric of society, and has called for an effective follow-up action to justice Michael Saldanha's independent probe which has indicted the BJP government as perpetrators behind the anti-Christian strife that took place there.
A copy of a report condemning attacks on Christians in Karnataka by communal forces in 2008 was handed over to the archbishop on Tuesday.
'We are all deeply disappointed with the official Justice B K Somasekhara commission report, that was appointed by the Karnataka government to probe the anti-Church riots that took place in that state in 2008. From the media coverage of those events and the reports of the rallies held recently in Karnataka, it is clear that this commission failed miserably in its task of identifying the culprits. It exonerated the fundamentalist forces behind the attacks and made some uncalled-for remarks,' Ferrao stated.

It is obvious that the Justice Somashekara commission was a political appointment to give a clean chit to the culprits. It has exonerated the fundamentalist forces behind the attacks.

Justice Saldanha's inquiry is more profound, is wider, and has indicted the perpetrators behind the anti-Christian attacks, finding that the government in power was behind those forces.

The Central government has to take suitable action to avoid repetition of such communal attacks.
