MARGAO: The ticklish question of electing the new Chairperson of the Cuncolim Civic body will be decided by the Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao.
The three strong contenders for the hot seat – sitting Chairperson Devendra Desai, vice-Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas and Prof Laxman Naik – categorically said that the question will be decided by the Councilors in consultation with the Urban Development Minister.
While sitting vice-Chairperson Landry made it quite clear that he would stake his claim for the Chairperson’s post, Prof Naik said he would not be there in the race for the post of Chairperson, but would be keen to take the mantle at a later date.
Incidentally, the Urban Development Minister, said that the elected councilors would sit and decide amongst themselves the question over who would become the CMC Chairperson.
It is learnt that the delicate question would be addressed by rotating the post amongst the aspirants. Sources in the know said the Minister will take a decision after taking into account all factors given that 2011 is an election year and would not want any dissensions in the Civic group.
